I tried to turn my Mac into a server but no matter what I did, I couldn't keep it from crashing I think it may have just gotten too hot or something. It's cheap, I have to say that. It's quiet, which is good for SOHO. You're expected to expand by plugging in a thunderbolt disk array, and you'll need another computer with decent space for your Time Machine backups this is the exception I insisted on - got a Synology NAS for TM backups.
I do not like the software. Out of the box, it's the typical Apple configuration. Answer a few questions and Apple just continues like nothing happened. It can't be that easy, can it? I marvel at the wondrous Apple engineering, and then later I'm swearing at the same software because of bugs that apple doesn't seem interested in fixing.
Mac Mini As Home Server For Media?
Nonetheless, I'd recommend it for an all-Mac workgroup of 10 or fewer people. It has to be all-Mac, though. It's easier to integrate Mac workstations with Windows Server than the other way around. As for Mac Mini or Mac Pro, it depends on your needs. I have a client that recently loaded Microsoft Server on a Mac Mini. I had my doubts, but it is working fairly well.

No redundancy, but other than that, it feels like a regular Server and is doing ok. It is a small operation with only 6 or 8 workstations, so it is ideal for that small environment. We don't use Macs as servers. We have two Macs onsite.

One is a standalone attached to some machine in the back. The other is a MacBook Pro that is sitting in my storage room. We have a Mac Mini setup as a file server for our Mac users.
They actually manage the majority of the administration, and in the 3 years it has been in service we have yet to encounter an issue. I have a few Mac Mini servers on the way as we speak.
I am needing these to manage a whole lot of i devices that are showing up later this semester. I went with the Mac Mini because of one thing, it is rack mountable with a tray as where the trash can looking thing doesn't fit well anywhere into my server closet. I went with the tray from Sonnet. You don't need a powerful PC to run Windows server, either, if your only goal is to serve a handful of accounts and profiles. I run Mac servers and with the death of Xserve have moved almost everything to either Windows or Linux. We don't run Red Hat though, so support for Ubuntu would be nice! So current assessment - works pretty well for small organization, but be prepared for some gotchas not unlike other server software.
